When Autumn Leaves Start To Fall…

Believe it or not, there’s still some amazing color all around Stowe. My observation over the years has been that the reds, oranges and yellows get the most vibrant when many trees have already shed their foliage and the leaves remaining are just about to fall down. If you’re in the area, visit the Taber Hill and Upper Mountain Road areas for some spectacular fall views right now.

For me as a photographer, fall remains a yearly highlight. Some of this is pure expedience: The great thing about October is that sunrise isn't until after 6:30 or even 7:00, meaning I don't have to get out of bed at an inhumane time to catch the best light (hey, I like to sleep in once in a while too!). On top of that, the Stowe Valley is often covered in a thick blanket of fog this time of year, providing this nice soft glow to any photos taken within it. This means I can often keep shooting for hours on end, because the sun doesn't penetrate it.

On most occasions I'll drive to a higher elevation first to get above the fog and fly the drone, taking photos of the inversion (a spectacular sight every time). Then I drive back down into the fog and find my beloved back roads in and around town. I enjoy that part the most. On some mornings I arrive home with hundreds of photos, though many don't make the cut. Add some video, and it's a lot of content to process!

I have just added the best of this year's fall images to my Fall Gallery. Not everything you may have seen on my Instagram and Facebook feeds is there, as I'm quite picky (if you hadn't already noticed). That said, if there's a photo you like which is missing from this gallery, please feel free to reach out.

I hope all of you had the opportunity to witness a beautiful fall foliage wherever you are! It truly is a special time of year.
